Exploring Mankato’s Vibrant Arts and Culture Scene

Mankato, Minnesota, boasts a dynamic arts and culture scene that offers residents and visitors a plethora of experiences. From annual festivals to public art installations, the city provides numerous opportunities to engage with the arts.

Annual Festivals

Twin Rivers Arts Festival

Held annually during the weekend immediately following Thanksgiving, the Twin Rivers Arts Festival is a free event dedicated to connecting professional artists with the Greater Mankato community. Over the years, the festival has grown to feature over 70 artists, authors, and musicians, offering attendees a chance to interact with creators and purchase unique, handmade goods. The 2026 festival is scheduled for November 28-29 at the Mayo Clinic Health System Event Center.

CityArt Walking Sculpture Tour

Since 2011, the CityArt Walking Sculpture Tour has been a highlight of Mankato’s cultural calendar. Each year, new sculptures are installed throughout the City Center, creating an outdoor gallery that residents and visitors can enjoy year-round. The 2026-27 tour features 26 new sculptures, installed on May 16, 2026, offering a fresh perspective on public art in the city.

Public Art Installations

Silo Art Project

One of Mankato’s most striking public art pieces is the Silo Art Project by international artist Guido van Helten. This large-scale mural brings together themes of community, diversity, inclusion, and participation. The artwork, developed in consultation with various Native and non-Native community representatives, allows for open interpretation and has become a significant landmark in the city.

CityArt in the Alley

In response to construction on Belgrade Avenue, CityArt introduced “CityArt in the Alley,” a four-event series activating the Belgrade alleyway with art, experiences, and community engagement throughout the summer of 2026. This initiative reimagines how art is presented in Lower North Mankato, offering residents new ways to interact with creative works.

Galleries and Cultural Centers

Carnegie Art Center

Located at 120 S Broad St, the Carnegie Art Center serves as a hub for local and regional artists. The center hosts rotating exhibitions, featuring a diverse range of artworks. Additionally, the Gallery Shop showcases creations from over 40 artists, providing a platform for the community to support local talent.

Twin Rivers Council for the Arts

The Twin Rivers Council for the Arts is dedicated to fostering creativity and community engagement. Their programs include the Best in Art Series, which features artists competing for awards, and the Writers Series, offering moderated conversations with authors. These initiatives aim to integrate the arts into the fabric of daily life in Mankato.

Whether you’re a longtime resident or a visitor, Mankato’s arts and culture scene offers a rich tapestry of experiences that reflect the city’s commitment to creativity and community.
