Mankato is actively implementing initiatives to promote environmental sustainability and resilience. The city’s Strategic Plan includes developing specific and prioritized initiatives to continue our community’s sustainability efforts. Thanks to a Local Climate Action Grant from the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA), we now have the Climate Action Plan. This plan includes more than 80 recommendations across 17 areas of the city. These actions range from updating policies and adjusting operations to adding new tools and equipment—all with the shared goal of building a more resilient and sustainable Mankato.
In addition to city-led efforts, local organizations are contributing to environmental sustainability. The Blue Earth Project, established in 2017, focuses on leading Southern Minnesota into an ecological paradigm shift towards a resilient future. Their initiatives aim to address environmental challenges through innovative programming and community activation.
Furthermore, Minnesota State University, Mankato, is actively engaged in sustainability through its Mavericks for Sustainability program. This includes initiatives like the Guaranteed Energy Savings Program, which promotes energy efficiency and renewable energy measures in public facilities, resulting in significant energy savings and reduced carbon emissions.
These collective efforts underscore Mankato’s dedication to fostering a sustainable and environmentally conscious community.
